New Jack Swing

Have you ever thought, ‘if I had the training regime, support structure and equipment given to the pros, then I could shave off 10 shots a round?’ This is the opportunity afforded Jack Edmonds as he attempts to wake up from his swing hell, and become a scratch golfer.

You see our Jack has been stuck as a five handicapper for as long as he can remember, and despite his best efforts his mind and body won’t allow him to break this glass ceiling. So what’s a boy to do? Go to Sheffield and let the guys at Zenjin stick reflective electric balls to his naked torso, that’s what.

The Zenjin is an Elite Golf Performance Programme that engineers Mind, Body and Motion.

A collaboration with SportsPulse and Centre for Sport and Exercise Science at Sheffiedl Hallam University, the Zenjin programme benefits from a hand-picked team that has a wealth of experience in athlete support, applied research, healthcare and corporate wellness.

Every part of the game will receive attention from nutrition and diet, swing mechanics, putting, fitness, strength, flexibility training, course strategy and perhaps most importantly psychology. In these areas Zenjin’s training programme will look to implement slow changes that become second nature and stay with you for life.

Jack quickly reached level five on the surfing simulator.

In the coming weeks Jack will complete testing that will determine a personalised training schedule catered to maxamise his potential. Then the really hard work starts. As Jack puts it, “I have this help at my disposal now and my support team are just as keen as me to reach my goal…I need to do this for all our sakes”.

You can check out the first stage in GOLFPUNK 33 out now and follow Jack’s progress at www.golfpunkonline.com.

Nail It

Good news club swingers good news. Golf guru Joe Hagan, the man who cured the Webitors incurable slice, has released his book. “Nail It with 3skills golf” is an impressive tome that is sure to benefit golfers of any ability.

At first we were a little annoyed that the secrets that had been divulged to us are going to be on the open market. We aren’t just being selfish but if everyone reads this book they’ll get better at golf, which means by comparison we appear worse at golf. Actually, that is a bit selfish.

We implore you to pick up a copy, available from Hersham Village Golf Club (01932 267666) or www.3skillsgolf.com.

You can also find out more by joining the 3skills group on facebook or check out My Swing Hell in GOLFPUNK31 out now.

Get involved.

Tuition

Need lessons, can’t rally afford them. Then look no further than Best Golf who have a critique on “other ways” to get your instruction.

We recommend reading the tuition in GP, then again we would.

”If you wish to learn how to play golf, you can hire a golf instructor to guide you. However, if an instructor is not available or you just can t afford one, you can always refer to books and magazines to know how the game is played. This can be especially helpful if you prefer self-study. Golf literature can teach you about preparation for a game, rules and etiquette, and the best and latest golf equipment on the market….

Make it Personal

Looking for a way to stay ahead in business? Bamboozle your clients and competitors with customised golf stuff. Promotional golf products could soon be the must have item for marketing geniuses and show offs alike.

Obviously we wouldn’t mention it if we had not already got involved. We see the value of brand extension as the new Whitlam GP Putter (name to be confirmed) will testify.

Check out the article at farfromboring.com to find out how to get yourself a Office Fit Interiors driver to smack the personalised golf balls stamped with a picture of the last person who let you down.

”“Not only is the game of golf big business, but it's big IN business too. Millions of business transactions happen on the golf courses of the world nearly every day of the year. From sales negotiations to legal settlements, the golf club is as mighty as the pen when it comes to getting business done.

It's hard to separate the social from the business aspects of a workday spent on the links, and perhaps its better that way. You see, conducting business on the golf course is just as complicated as conducting business in the boardroom. Only the environment and clothing are different.”----Says Richard Myers of Ezinearticles.com….”

Go Go Gadget?

Calling all golf geeks, and there are enough of us about. We summon you to debate the use of gadgets in this tech heavy game of ours.

Golf gadgets have traditionally been the Chrimbo present of choice for anyone who has ever expressed an interest in the game. When a friend took up the game aged 28 he got nothing but golf tat for two years. If you go round to his house you still can’t move for putting machines and positive energy bracelets. In the end he had to tell his loved ones that enough is enough. Yet he still gets exploding golf balls every year from a zany uncle.

Not everyone is as ungrateful as this mystery friend whom we have to keep nameless for fear of antagonising his relatives. Acario Daire blogged an ode to gadgets that Matty, sorry I mean Mr Anonymous, hopes the rest of the Kennedy’s, oops we mean the rest of his family won’t read.

The greatest golf gadget since the ham and cheese putter

Take it away Acario….

” Golf gadgets are things are interest you and are useful while playing golf. You find them in many varieties and they surprise you by coming in various sizes like the stars in the sky. They are made to make the crazy game of golf more fun, a lot less strenuous and simply easier to play. They are made in all the crazy ways possible, using all the imagination and all the possible ideas they get. Unlike short-game training devices or swing aids they do not work directly on teaching you the proper techniques of the golf swing. They are excellent presents that are regularly gifted to each other on Christmas. No family goes without getting at least one gadget. They are also taken to be of traditional importance.

For most of the golfers after receiving the gifts, it becomes even more important for them to play well. The expectations that are on them become more heavy than usual, and they try much harder with more determination. Some might feel embarrassed to receive the golf gadgets, but some may think it is funny to receive a golf gadget which might help them in making their swing better. It is a known fact that gadget addicts go to any extent to buy the new gadgets that comes up. Some say gadgets help them improve their game and so buy the gadgets. But it is a fact that nothing can improve your play than a straight hard practice that nobody really wants to do let alone has time for.”

What are the odds?

Just to wind you up after returning home from chopping up your local course and you get taunted by this....

Move over Tiger Woods, Alexander Ovechkin can play golf, too.

The Washington Capitals star, who won the Calder Trophy last year as the NHL's rookie of the year, aced the par-3, 160-yard fourth hole yesterday at the Springfield Golf and Country Club during the team's annual Caps Care charity tournament.

Ovechkin had several chances at the hole as he greeted groups all day long at No. 4 and played a shot with them. But given his lack of golf experience, it was surprising to see the 21-year-old Russian record the hole-in-one.

"This was my first time playing golf," Ovechkin said. "I guess it's easy. Maybe it would be better if I played golf, not hockey. It was lucky, though. I have to play again now, see how I can do."

My Summer Fling

Continuing my return to the blogging world I thought I'd fill you in on some of the things I have been doing in my absence.

I've lost weight. This is rather worrying as I wasn't exactly a fat chap to begin with. What is most alarming about this is when I recently stayed at Equipment Editor Dan Owen's nan's house, she refused to let me leave in the morning until I was force fed breakfast. Nans and grans do know best though.

If anyone has any handy, healthy weight-gaining and exercise tips then please get in touch.

I have also been playing some more golf. In fact. I have revisited the game with a passion and even been trying out some new equipment. The problem I suffer with in my game is that I reguarly leave putts short in the middle of the hole. This is incredibly frustrating, as I'm sure a lot of you can sympathise with. What exactly is the point of being able to cover 350 yards of grass in style if you can't negotiate the last twenty feet.

I have used a Titleist Bullseye for the last seven years and am very much in love with it. Despite some putting woes, I have always maintained that my relationship with my putter [Charlotte, don't ask] has been like everyone else's human relationships. Good times, bad times etc etc...

I recently had a brief affair though. I don't mind saying this out loud because Charlotte is a lump of metal and doesn't understand. I met a vibrant, sexy looking petit number that came into the office, The Pinfire eagle (pink putter pictured). I decided to try it out on a brief trip to Spain (work, obviously) and I don't know whether it was the thrill of holiday romance or whatever but we got on like a house on fire. I holed everything, from all distances and my scorecard has never enjoyed such a sparkling array of scores near the actual par of the hole.

This rather shocked me because I'm very much a classicist when it comes to golf clubs. I've got a set of blades in the bag, which is a simple bag and strap - none of this reinforced pvc, ultra-light carbon fibre bunff - and the Bullseye is as simple as it gets when it comes to putters. So, the exotic look of the Pinfire range wasn't something I thought would appeal to me, but the score I shot did appeal, massively, so this pink beauty will be staying in the bag for a little while longer while me and Charlotte try to work things out.

If you fancy a little bit on the side then the Pinfire range are reviewed on our GolfJunk section or visit www.pinfiregolf.co.uk

The golf drill guru

The boys in the office have ventured out into the gale force winds for a game of post-production golf. Well, we never said we were geniuses.

Anyway, there's been a bit of rivalry in the office and a few egos have been puffed up and bets laid on the outcome of today's golf.

So, in order to cope with the unreasonable demands of British summertime the boys have been practising some drills they found on this great new site http://www.thegolfdrillguru.com/ all week.

There has been all manner of disco shapes thrown in the office and many resembling a circus act contortionist more than a golf swing, but that shouldn't be a reflection on some of the great advice that Duncan offers.

Check it out...

The London Golf Show 2006

About this time last year GolfPunk was a bi-monthly magazine and we had just released our first issue with Tiger Woods on the cover.
GolfPunk was a baby compared to all the other golf magazines out there and we were still relatively unknown.
So, we decided to take a stand at the London Golf Show and spread the gospel. We didn’t really know what to expect, (a handful of Ashworth clad fella hitting a few balls on a range or a load of PR chit-chat about nothing in particular?) All we wanted to do was add a little GolfPunk flavour to the punch and so we packed a fridge, some bubbles, a bevvy of BunkerBabes and a vanload of Srixon golf balls, took a deep breath and headed to the London Docklands.
What actually occurred was nothing short of amazing.
35,000 people descended on the show over 4 days and the majority of them trampled over the GolfPunk turf. As the drinks flowed and music blared GolfPunk received a proper welcome to the golfing world. Sam Torrance and Ronnie Corbett subscribed (who wouldn’t with 24 free golf balls), a host of celebrities mingled with the crowd at the bar, Fibber and the Golf Monk appeared in every conceivable photo-opportuntity, there were trick shot shows, professional lessons, Lab Monkeys and a whole bunch of new friends who just disappeared into the blur.
It was flabbergasting. Hardly anyone had heard of GolfPunk, yet in the space of four short days we felt like we achieved the golfing equivalent of scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final, as a teenager, in the 93rd minute, with the last kick of the game, against Germany.
And now it’s time to do it all again.
In the past year we’ve become a monthly magazine, spent time with Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke to name a few, been all over the world (well, one of us has, eh Owen?), played some of the most amazing courses and met thousands of fellow golf punks.
But we know where we’ve come from. We remember how it all started. And all this malarkey isn’t going to change us. GolfPunk is founded around a besotting fixation with the game of golf and that is what we want to show the world.
So, whatever you planned to do over the weekend of the 27-30 April, cancel it. Get yourself down to the Excel centre in London’s Docklands and come and find us. We are on stall 1128 and we can’t wait to meet you.
For directions and information visit www.londongolfshow.com and register - or call 0870 145 1205 to purchase your tickets*.

*Advance ticket prices £12.50 for Adults and £8.00 for U-16s.
On-the-door ticket prices £15.00 for Adults and £10.00 for U-16s

Slow mo action from the world's best

Quite a quiet and subdued return to the blog after the Easter break. We did all manage to squeeze in a few holes over the weekend and now some of us longingly gaze out at the blue skies, while others wander around saying things like: "I've sorted my tempo."

For me, the highlight of going out to play golf was the slow motion swing sequences I found today on the BBC's website (while researching furiously). Ken Brown talks you through the intricacies of Phl Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Colin Montgomerie's swing and they stand there looking as graceful as swans and smash the ball into another orbit.

Being in Slo-mo it makes you think that you can do it...

Master-ful

There's less than a month before the golfing world turns it's eyes towards Georgia and the serene beauty of Augusta National for the first of the year's majors, The Masters.

From the year so far you would have to be an idiot to rule Tiger out of the race to capture his fifth Green Jacket, although you can still get a good price on him to win outright at 5/2. Tiger is winning everything he's looking at this season and so the more interesting question is who will mount a challenge?

Tiger excepted, none of the world's top five seem to be in form at the moment. Ernie Els made an exceptional comeback after a lengthy lay off with injury, but since then has only shown glimpses of his true form. Phil Mickelson looked to be on top of his game in the Doral championship and for a brief moment it looked like there was going to be a repeat of the titantic battle that happened over the Blue Monster course in 2005 between the two Americans, but he faded away to nothing over the weekend and looked slightly over-awed by the end. Vijay Singh showed early promise, but has failed to capitalise on that early momentum and looks like he desperately needs a win to get him focussed again.

It looks like the threat could be from a new set of talent. Without causing fireworks, Rory Sabbatini got off to a great start this season and other main talking points are the rise of players like Bubba Watson and JB Holmes, both exceptionally long hitters of the ball and probably well suited to Augusta. Luke Donald, David Toms and Chris DiMarco look very solid and are battering down the door to knock Tiger off the crown. Could this be the time and the place?

The main reason I'm postulating is because 40 years ago a chubby blonde tore Augusta to peices in a scintillating display that the legendary Bobby Jones described as "a game with which I'm not familiar." That man was Jack Nicklaus who finished nine strokes clear of nearest rivals, and if you needed further demonstration of the sheer scale of this performance his nearest rivals were Gary Player and Arnold Palmer.

Is the fortieth anniversary going to yield a similar competition? I flaming hope so.

Stats and Facts

Just browsing through the PGA Tour website and came across a few interesting statistics that have happened this year.

Big hitting Bubba Watson ended a fabulous streak of 99 holes without a bogey last week. Although no official records are kept, Tiger Woods is believed to be the leader on 110.
For consecutive holes without making a birdie, GolfPunk's Equipment Editor Dan Owen is in the lead with 5,678,538,116 holes.

Another item of note is that I think the whole world will nod in agreement if I say that Tiger Woods is in the form of his life at the moment, winning three of the four strokeplay events he has competed in this year, yet he's only second in the Money List, behind Rory Sabbatini. You certainly can make a good living on the professional circuit.

Carne's latest creation

Here's something to get you salivating...

Jay Flemma has been sent images of the new layout at Carne golf course in Belmullet, County Mayo, on the west coast of Northern Ireland

Carne is a course that is very close to our hearts and one of those golfing places that you must visit before you die. We were so enamoured by the course that it made it's way into GolfPunk's 'Essential 100' as the world's best 'undiscovered golf course'.

A new nine will surely be a welcome addition to the world of links golf, as Jay says:

'Jim Engh and Tim Hartnett sent me a couple pix of the new nine Jim is building at Carne. The top pic is 9...the dunes pinch at the landing area. The bottom pic is 7, looking towards the green. Both holes needed almost no grading and the holes will look the same with the fairway and rough cut. Grading is almost done. Jim is going over in May to start green contouring. Seeding will occur next fall. Carne is located in the northwest corner of Ireland, called the "bloody forelands" because of the way the sunset reflects off the water and land giving it an eerie crimson hue.'

New Golfbuddy

Have you ever been sat on a Friday afternoon thinking that a game of golf would be the perfect tonic for the weekend if only you had someone to play with? Or perhaps your partner lets you down and leaves you lonesome on a Saturday morning, desperately pandering to join a twosome?
Well, we've been talking to a group of guys that are trying to drive these dilemmas to extinction. www.mygolfbuddy.com have set up a website where people can find out who is playing in their local area and whether they fancy a game. It's like online-dating, only your partner is armed with sticks and could possibly humble you on the first date.
The site has just launched in the UK with a popular response so if you are sat twiddling your thumbs the answer could just be a short click away.

Defcon Makes you hit it further

GP's Crouchy here. Just been at the range hitting balls listening to my ipod, when...Nattys single 'eurostars' came on I was killing it. I mean absloutly smoking it, dead straight.
I thought It may have been just me, but when Coldplay came on I started hooking it again. So I set my pod to repeat on 'Eurostars' and sure enough, the Tiger swing came back.

Check out, sample and go buy the album www.defconline.com

Tapas and golf

I went out and hit some balls today, at flags, with a pencil and card in my pocket. The 2006 revolution has begun!!

January on these shores can be a bitter experience, so I confined my golfing to the driving range and a solid month of tweaking and blister inducing discipline. The one flaw about the range, however, is that the fairways are pretty wide, in fact there is no fairway, there's no rough either and there's no nervous chipping over bunkers and the like.

It's all very well beating balls and working on your game (I even had a lesson - I have 'floppy hands at takeaway') but you can't really assess how you're playing. Your head might be right, technique may be spot on, but the one hole the 'rebuild speculum' can't see up is the one 450 yards away round the dogleg.

Two things inspired me to get out on course. Tiger Woods and tapas.

I watched Tiger at Dubai 'playing badly' and still winning in a play off. Say what you like about the fella, and I'm not exactly running the fan club, but he knows how to win. Sat watching him (8am GMT) I thought 'Balls to it' I can do that and headed up to the course.

This is where the tapas comes in. Not exactly orthodox but hey, I was on my own. The night before I went out to a Spanish restaurant trying to educate my little sister's palate and had a huge selection of tapas. It was wonderful and I heartily recommend it to all, but something was said about how the meal was 'a series of little good things but the whole dinner was spectacular' (she's very eloquent for 15). Herein was my new golfing analogy. Golf, when you break it down is one hole of good things replicated 18 times. You could go further and say, one good swing replicated x times etc. The important thing is that you just try one little good thing at a time and keep trying little good things and then you walk off at the end thinking 'that was something spectacular'. I beat my handicap (just) with a 79.

So my advice for 2006? Think Tigers and tapas.

Web bloke Shaun

LIVE FROM ORLANDO

We've had a fresh batch of photos from the PGA Show in Orlando and have posted them up for you to see. Equipment editor Dan Owen told me he had to bit a bit sneaky getting a few of these shots, so if you see a shifty looking English bloke at show leave him alone. He's working for us.
Here are some of the titbits he's found...

Resolutely not fussed

We've left behind the 'season to be jolly' and have crashed our way into the 'season of good intentions' with a list longer than the christmas card mail-out.
New Year's resolutions are an ingenious concept. Straight after the longest period of over-indulgence of the year everyone pledges to get themselves back into shape. (unless you're a morbidly obese, alcoholic with a spending addiction). It's also perfectly timed. The church steps in and tells us 'enough is enough' on 'Twelth Night', January 6th and the decorations come down everyone gets back to work. On top of that January and February are two of the coldest, most dismal months of the year. Getting dressed up and going out seems like to much of a palaver and time is be better spent getting into shape or learning French or something in preparation for the spring when people start smiling again.
Of course, there's no point going out because everyone's given up drinking unless the liquid is in a bottle marked 'Evian'. Web bloke Shaun reckons he can become teetotal as long as we don't count those two pints he had on Saturday. I've taken the realistic approach of cutting down on all the junk I was taking before because I know that as soon as I have a bad round I'm going to swear, smoke and drown my sorrows in the clubhouse after.
Everyone also has a penchant for lycra and low GI foods. Bogey lounge has taken on a $300 a man weight loss contest with two buddies and every golf website in Christendom has the latest trick to get you 'fit for 06'.
We went to the gym at the weekend as part of the new 'healthy body, healthy mind' crap and you can view the results below as Shaun tries to show off his new physique after one session on the weights. Personally, I think I'm fine as I am but as long as it makes him act like a pillock I'm all for it.

Bill bonds with the stars

I came across an amusing little newspeice about Bill Clinton giving golf lessons to ex- James Bond star Pierce Brosnan.
Apparently, the pair met on a Christmas break in Hawaii and bonded (sorry) over the links.
Brosnan admitted to not being the world's best golfer and Clinton stepped in to give him a few tips.
"It's terrifying… and you have about 26 secret servicemen standing around looking at you. We went out there and we were practising and he wanted to give me a few tips; he tried to hold my hips at some point… because my swing was off. He said: 'You're doing it all wrong, Pierce… now let me just hold on your hips here.' "
Sounds similar to how Clinton got in trouble last time. And as I recall Clinton is no David Leadbetter. He's infamous for taking mulligans left, right and centre and employing the leather wedges of his army of secret servicemen, then having the audacity to claim that he plays of 'ten'.
Still, at least we've got one of the world's statesmen doing his bit for the game.

TaylorMade face the Bombsquad

Webitor bloke Sifa and myself were brainstorming in the office (see below) about our plan of attack this year when we received an email from the guys at BombSquadGolf.
It seems the pesky critters have also been bashing their heads together, the only difference is they've actually got something to show for their efforts other than a bruised head.
Today they will have TaylorMade Adidas Golf online for a chat about all the TaylorMade RAC and Rossa products.
The discussion begins at 4.30 to 6.30pm (pacific time). That's half past midnight for all you golf junkies over here in history filled Europe.
Jose Miraflor, Duane Anderson and guest will be answering all your questions so if you want to find out everything and anything about TaylorMade and the year ahead then go to www.BombSquadGolf.com. We'll see you in there!

Ooooh, feel the creativity flowing

It's Childsplay really...

The guys at Eat Golf have gone back to school for a bit of a putting lesson. I'm not sure whether they are seriously stripping the game back to the bare essentials or whether they've unearthed some wonderous new teaching technique. Bloody hilarious though!

If it works for Vijay and Tiger will it work for me.

Winter is well and truly here and it's traditionally the time of year when I do one of two things. My clubs either get locked up with the solemn promise that I will never use them again or I book a few lessons and head down the range looking to burst out of the blocks next year.
Now I've had a fairly good year. I've hit shots that had me contemplating trotting up to Open regional qualifying with my sticks and chancing my arm, but at the same time I've the silly mistakes that make me the category two golfer that I am. I'm looking for the key that will eliminate those stupid dropped shots and make my game more solid all round, but golf is subjective and there is no one magic key. I've been looking around forums for some advice and came across this titbit on Wounded Duck's blog. There's been quite a bit spoken about 'one-plane swings' but I've never really understood the theory. All I know is that one of it's pioneers, Moe Norman, is a true legend. Have a look and see if you think it's worth me overhauling the swing this winter.

Here's a fantastic website by Chuck Quinton,(www.oneplanegolfswing.com) a golf instructor somewhere in Florida. He teaches the one plane swing, and has lots of streaming video drills to watch. I think it's a good starting point for learning the swing, but finding a local teacher is ultimately the best idea. From my own experience, this swing works great with the driver, but I've a little trouble applying it to short irons.

Do you like your shaft bendy or stiff?

The age old debate about what shaft to use rumbles on and here is a useful guide if you need some extra information.
The two most important parts of the golf club which can spell the difference between winning and losing are the head and the shaft. The shaft of the golf club connects the grip to the head. Most modern golf club shafts are made of either steel or graphite.
Most manufacturers rate their shafts in one of six degrees of stiffness. From least to most stiff these are: Ladies (L); Seniors (A); Regular (R); Firm (F); Extra Firm (X); and Stiff (S).
Most golfers prefer a shaft that is stiffer, and manufacturers can only oblige. If you make the shaft super stiff, however, you can begin to affect distance and strength negatively.
Then there’s the difference between steel and graphite golf shafts. Generally, if you have back problems or not very confident with the strength of your swing or drive, you should stick with the graphite variety.

How to grip the club

Don't say we never do anything for ya

Today, I found out I’ve been holding the golf club the wrong way.Since I was unaware of the fact that I was holding the golf clubs wrong, I would like to share what I found out with all of you. I feel like such an idiot. Everytime I would take hold and grip the club, I would do so in the palm of my hand. Evidently as you grip the golf club, you’re supposed to do so gripping it with your fingers. Hopefully using this technique will improve my game.
Too bad the golf season is over for now and I can’t try out this techinque until next year.
