In the 372 years since it was established Old Saybrook in Connecticut has given the world a lot. It is where the first US submarine, the Turtle, was built. It was the site of the Collegiate School of Connecticut which was later named Yale University. And was the former home of habitual award winner and Spencer Tracey love interest Katherine Houghton Hepburn. Now Old Saybrook have done something we hope will spread throughout the world, they have made it legal to drive golf buggies. Forty residents unanimously passed a decree allowing buggies on town roads and sidewalks (known as pavements to our blighty based blog fans). However state roads are still a no go. More fun than walking. GOLFPUNK think this is good, but not great. Old Saybrook should take a leaf out of St Andrews book. For the 2005 British Open Championship GP somehow got permission to drive buggies around the historic town. All went well, but it is a good idea to have some sort of legislation in place or you will get more occasions like the last year when we saw some berk drive a golf buggy straight off Wentworth and down the pub at the BMW PGA Championship. Now that’s just not cricket. For more on this story click here…
