Fires Put Location Of The Tour Championship In Doubt
The wildfires in California have put the location of The Tour Championship in doubt. A decision on where the championship will be played is expected today as officials assess the impact of the fires. To date the blaze has claimed 11 lives and 22 homes. Barona Creek Golf Club - the original venue for the tournament - escaped unscathed but access has been severely restricted, causing problems for the players and TV.
Lets hope everyone involved has a safe time.
“Nationwide Tour officials arrived at Barona Creek Golf Club – the Lakeside, Calif., resort layout scheduled to host next week’s Tour Championship – early Wednesday and although the course was not damaged by the wildfires that have scorched southern California, the season finale may still have to be moved.
While Barona Creek, which is about 30 minutes from San Diego, was unscathed by the flames, the tour informed players at this week’s Miccosukee Championship in Miami that because of limited access to Barona Creek there was a possibility it could be moved to another venue.
A memo placed in players’ lockers late Tuesday read: “The resort is in no danger but the surrounding areas have been evacuated. . . . We are monitoring the situation and are exploring all options.”
Because there is just a single two-lane road into the resort, access to the area has been limited since the area was evacuated earlier this week.
Golf Channel crews attempting to reach the course to set up for next week’s championship were unable to do so Tuesday, and tournament director Jim Duncan reached the site Wednesday morning.
“The air is as clear up here as any I’ve seen,” said Duncan, who was still evaluating the course and infrastructure. “There’s some wind damage, but (no damage) from the fire…..”
