Beware The Antipodean

In modern terms New Zealanders and Australians are known to Europeans as Antipodeans. For arguments sake lets just use the historical meaning of the term when antipodeans referred to anyone from south of the equator.

As it stands in the Official World Golf Ranking for week 46 November 16th 2008, American golfers make up the biggest chunk of the top 100 with 34, Europe is next with 31, then the Antipodeans with 23½ (half being Camilo Villegas as Colombia straddles the equator) and the last chunk to be 'other' with 11½ (golfers from above the equator but not from USA or Europe).

So the old backpacking, couch dwelling, rugby loving, public fund sucking, better weather bragging, pom beating antipodeans with a questionable relationship with sheep have now really become a force to be reckoned with, making golf a truly global game. With Antipodes evenly distributed throughout the top 100 (3½ in the top 10 and 13½ in the top 50) they are poised to take more silver wear south of the equator in 2009.

Since the 2000 Masters 36 majors have passed, if you take out 12 from Tiger Woods the Antipodeans have claimed 9 of the remaining 24. We have the Presidents Cup but is it time to introduce a Europe vs Antipodean event? As an Antipodean myself I'd be happy to drop the rest of the world tag.

Saying that It'll be a while before you see this scene on the last day of the Masters.
