Golf Carts Hit The Road

Fancy taking your clubs buggy for a quick spin into town? Maybe pick up the latest in golfing fashion or even grab a quick bite to eat. With the escalation of fuel costs, more and more Americans are hitting the road in their souped-up golf buggies.

Twenty-six states in America allow the use of low speed electrical vehicles on the local streets and it is one way of getting around the $5 a gallon fuel costs.

The Tomberlin Group, based out of Augusta are producing golf buggies fully equipped with mirrors, a speedometer and even windshield wipers and Illinois resident Bob Woll would pick his golf cart over his car any day.

"There's no noise, no checking the oil or how much gas you've got. You just get on and go," said Woll, a 67-year-old alderman. “You can cover up to 40 miles on each charge and get around 30 miles to your gallon.”

These golf carts must be insured but with policies at around $30 (£15) a month, its relatively cheap and the savings made on fuel costs easily cover the running costs. Could this be the answer to global warming? Will we soon see the streets of London chock-a-block with golf buggies? Maybe it’s worth exploring.

"I'm nipping out to get some milk, anyone want anything."
