Epon Driver

As each box of clubs flocks into GP Towers as we sample all the latest kit for the new year, it's beginning to feel more and more like Christmas. In fact, without trying to boast, it’s easy to fall into a rut of golf clubs just being golf clubs, and no longer shiny objects of desire with this job. A recent cold windy morning session at the driving range, however, put things back into perspective for me.
I was there to try some clubs from a Japanese manufacturer just about to launch in the UK. Epon’s design philosophy revolves around that single moment of impact, the one time where club, ball, and player are all as one. Many modern designs feel hollow and tinny, so it was fantastic to try clubs that felt as good as they looked.

We’ve got irons and wedges to show you in upcoming issues, but thought we’d show you the driver here. It’s not cheap, at £480 it’s the most expensive driver this side of a gold-plated Honma, but it feels so good at impact that we can see many good golfers ponying up for this. The simple traditional shaped head is nice to see in this age of squares and triangles. And whereas most drivers feel tinny and loud, this feels soft, almost sponge like, the ball feels like it’s compressing on the face and shooting off into the distance. It might not be like Christmas everyday anymore, but you definitely get more than the usual one birthday a year working at GolfPunk.
