Golf Party

The GOLFPUNK office are looking to beg, borrow and steal in order to get ourselves over to the Australian Open in a couple of months time. We love golf, we love glorious sunshine, we are also partial to the odd tin of Tooheys but the thing that is going to set this tournament apart from most is the crowd.

The powers that be at Golf Australia have dispensed with the traditional paternal notion of ‘sit down and be quiet’ enforced by the fun police and embraced the concept of the golf party. Looking at the example of the Phoenix Open, The Australian Golf Club have made the par-three 11th the ‘stadium hole”. The green will be enclosed by a wall of fans with bars and musicians fuelling an eight hour party over four rounds.

The Scottsdale crowd react the call, "Free cheese burgers for all".

Golf Australia tournament director Paul McNamee isn’t shy about where the idea came from, the notorious “Sweet 16th” at Scottsdale, Arizona a.k.a ‘ the wildest hole on the PGA Tour’. The hole helped attract 168,000 fans to the tournament in February, numbers that cannot be ignored. And it’s not just the fans that love it, Geoff Ogilvy reckons, “the 16th at Phoenix is a mad house. The noise is definitely alcohol induced, but as long as they aren’t yelling during the golf swing it will be fine.”

Never has been, never will be.

Everyone at GP Towers from the illustrators to PR wants in, but I don’t fancy our chances. Everybody knows plane tickets don’t roll downhill. If it’s anything like Arizona whoever gets to go is going to have a blast. Lucky bleeders.

National Minority Golf Foundation

Being the golf website for everyone we had to let you know about this touching story. We’re always up for people goving golf a good name and promoting this noble sport of ours to the masses so good work NMGF, keep it up.

“They toasted the engagement in a Miami bar. John Merchant (pictured above) sipped a Bombay gin martini, straight up, extra dry with a twist. He rose, a triumphant smile on his face, shook hands with Bill Dickey and embraced Roy Richie.

The threesome, among the most influential black men in golf, had just agreed to create the National Minority Golf Foundation. Four years of industry meetings and tireless lobbying finally had yielded this: The birth of an independent organization committed to diversity in the sport, and perhaps more important, in the golf workforce.

“We really did believe that something could change, and we could make a permanent difference,” remembers Richie, of that momentous occasion in October 1995.

Richie, who became chairman of the NMGF board, was the matchmaker. His plan was to marry the efforts of Dickey – a retired real estate and insurance salesman who single-handedly had supported minority golfers through his National Minority Junior Golf Scholarship Association – and those of Merchant, a U.S. Golf Association Executive Committee member who had championed the diversity cause and would become the NMGF’s executive director.

Richie filed for the NMGF’s nonprofit status on Dec. 26, 1995. A bureaucratic ordeal that usually takes three to four months ended inexplicably with an approval the following day. “I must’ve found the only minority golfer in the IRS to review it,” Richie jokes. “It was extraordinary, and I think unprecedented”...

New Jack Swing

Have you ever thought, ‘if I had the training regime, support structure and equipment given to the pros, then I could shave off 10 shots a round?’ This is the opportunity afforded Jack Edmonds as he attempts to wake up from his swing hell, and become a scratch golfer.

You see our Jack has been stuck as a five handicapper for as long as he can remember, and despite his best efforts his mind and body won’t allow him to break this glass ceiling. So what’s a boy to do? Go to Sheffield and let the guys at Zenjin stick reflective electric balls to his naked torso, that’s what.

The Zenjin is an Elite Golf Performance Programme that engineers Mind, Body and Motion.

A collaboration with SportsPulse and Centre for Sport and Exercise Science at Sheffiedl Hallam University, the Zenjin programme benefits from a hand-picked team that has a wealth of experience in athlete support, applied research, healthcare and corporate wellness.

Every part of the game will receive attention from nutrition and diet, swing mechanics, putting, fitness, strength, flexibility training, course strategy and perhaps most importantly psychology. In these areas Zenjin’s training programme will look to implement slow changes that become second nature and stay with you for life.

Jack quickly reached level five on the surfing simulator.

In the coming weeks Jack will complete testing that will determine a personalised training schedule catered to maxamise his potential. Then the really hard work starts. As Jack puts it, “I have this help at my disposal now and my support team are just as keen as me to reach my goal…I need to do this for all our sakes”.

You can check out the first stage in GOLFPUNK 33 out now and follow Jack’s progress at www.golfpunkonline.com.

Question Of The Day

Today we heard what could be the greatest truth never proved.

"Vampires are the greatest golfers in the world, but they never have a chance to prove it."

This got us thinking, who would win the supernatural Ryder Cup.

We've opened a forum thread to find out.

Get involved and chuck your two pennies worth in at www.golfpunkonline.com/forum

Office Golf Challenge

News has reached us of a golf tournament that Team GP may actually have a chance of winning. You can keep your long drives, save your skins and jog on with your trick shots. The only discipline we ‘ve got a hope in Stoke of doing well in is office golf.

St Sofia Golf Club and Spa hosted the final of the annual Office Golf Championship on 21st September and it sounded a blast. The event - sponsored by Chivas Regal – has grown since its inception in 2006. However we’re a little disappointed to find out that Office Golf Bulgaria-style seems to comprise of specially designed holes and is played outside. There aren’t many details out there about how it works, so in true Webitor style I’ve made stuff up to fill in the blanks.

We in the GP Towers are office golf nuts, whether it’s playing horse from behind the photocopier for who gets the teas in, or deconstructing our swings between emails. In fact, if there is any firm out there who think they could take us on in an office Olympics of chipping into bins, canning putts over uneven carpets or even restricted swing gymnastics, then bring it on.

It’s cracking fun and keeps you (a little bit) fit.

To challenge us to an office golf showdown email us at website@jf-media.co.uk

Seve Trophy 2007

Congratulations to Great Britain and Ireland who retained the Seve Trophy at the Heritage Golf and Spa Resort on Sunday. GB&I, lead by 2008 Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo, went into the final day one point down but then blitzed the singles, taking eight of the ten points available.

The strong finish bodes well for the golfing legend - and occasional Harrison Ford impersonator’s - captaincy of the big one next year. Even if Lawrence Donegan didn’t think so. What we got from Lawro’s article, published on Friday, is because Nick’s not the most PR savvy man in the world he’s leaving himself open to get slaughtered by the press if Europe perform badly. GP couldn’t give a monkeys if Faldo does an impression of Lauren Cooper from The Catherine Tate Show for three days, as long a he comes home with the 17” x 9” wide gold cup bearing Samuel Ryder’s name. To use the parlance, “we’re not bovvered”.

Lord Of The Pings

All of you need this in your life. The guys at Ping have put together a lovely little micro site to encourage you to purchase their sticks. Ping have provided  a plethora of product information including a breakdown of the technology used, specifications and you can hear the engineers thoughts. Our favourite bit is the 3D feature that allows you to view the G10 and i10 irons from all sorts of fancy angles.

After going in there and having a play around I can think of no nicer environment to be cajoled into buying golf equipment, apart from the GOLFPUNK shop of course.

Check out the Ping mini site at www.pingpowerof10.com

Westwood Wins At The Belfry

Congratulations Lee Westwood for his triumph at the weekend. The man The Foozler routinely mistakes for Radio One’s rap DJ Tim Westwood posted a 15 under par 273 to take the Quinn Direct British Masters ahead of fellow golf punk Ian Poulter.
At the scene of his 2002 Ryder Cup heroics Westwood secured his 18th European Tour title with a blistering 65 yesterday to win by five shots. We hope that’s made up for the disappointment of losing his '00' status in GP26.

Check out the whole story below.

"That's the way it goes down, were getting ready to jump off. Exactly, dropping bombs (and so on)"

“Lee Westwood renewed his love affair with The Belfry after he won the Quinn Direct British Masters with a flawless final round of seven under par 65 to claim a victory he described as being “right up there with winning the Ryder Cup here in 2002

After winning three points for Europe and Captain Sam Torrance in their 15 1⁄2 to 12 1⁄2 success over the USA five years ago at The Belfry, Westwood gave himself more memories to cherish from the Brabazon Course as he secured his 18th European Tour title in style.

Westwood’s 15 under par 273 total secured a five shot triumph from fellow countryman Ian Poulter, who shot 70 for a ten under par 278 total and admitted he had been floored by his rival’s birdie-eagle run on holes 16 and 17.

Fellow Worksop resident and Westwood’s good friend, overnight leader Mark Foster, shot 73 and finished third on nine under par 279.

Both Foster and Poulter threatened during an enthralling final round tussle between the trio, but Westwood pulled clear down the stretch – and the manner of his triumph was emphatic.

A packed 18th hole, from fairway to greenside grandstand, cheered Westwood home, and the delighted golfer said: “I am feeling very happy. I’ve had some special moments in my career here – and this one is right up there. I don’t think I’ve ever been clapped the entire length of the final hole, which is obviously very, very special.”

On his round, he continued: “I barely put a foot wrong out there and made some key putts when I needed to on the back nine.

“On the 16th, I holed a big 35 footer like that in the 2002 Ryder Cup against Tiger and Davis, and I said that to Alastair my caddie after it went in. We went on to lose that match in the last two holes, but this time I managed to follow it up with an eagle. That put the icing on the cake."

Westwood, who was able to celebrate with his wife Laurae, and two young children, Sam and Poppy, once completing his round, added: “The Quinn Direct British Masters is a great title on The European Tour and it was one of those I was building up to. It’s great to win it here at The Belfry. It’s only an hour away from where I live, so there’s a lot of family and friends here to support me.”

Talking about rediscovering the winning habit, having claimed his 18th European Tour victory and second win of 2007, following his success at the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia, Westwood reflected: “I waited four years to win again, and it came in Spain earlier this year, so now I’ve got the second one, I’m very happy….”
