Keep It Under Your Hat

TaylorMade are gearing up for a big driver launch very soon, after spotting this new 'B' logo popping up on all their tour staffs drivers. We've got an inkling we know what it is, but we're not allowed to say yet. All will be revealed shortly...

Until then 'shhhhhhh'.

President's Cup Captains

Fred Couples and Greg Norman will lead the U.S. and International teams for the 2009 Presidents Cup golf matches in San Francisco.

Couples will replace Jack Nicklaus, who led the U.S. the past three times in the biennial competition against a team of players from outside the U.S. and Europe.

Norman, a three-time Presidents Cup competitor from Australia, replaces South Africa's Gary Player.

The U.S. won at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada last year and at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Virginia in 2005. The 2009 Presidents Cup is scheduled to be played at Harding Park Golf Club.

“It's kind of nerve-wracking to say that you're following Jack Nicklaus, but I think I will do a great job and will certainly have a good time,'' Couples said on a media conference call.

Another way at looking at this story is…"Boom Boom and The Great White Shark will lead the teams for the 2009 Presidents Cup. They take over from The Golden Bear and The Black Knight (aka Mr Fitness)."

Not only are these four former world number ones some of the best to ever play, they also have some of the best nicknames.

I-Tour

Richard Dean gives us the low down on the I Tour. A place where the common golfer gets a taste of life on the pro circuit.

“For the common, everyday workingman, there are not many golf tours. So the Individual Golf Tour is a godsend for many Houston-area golfers looking for competition.

In its fifth year, the I-Tour is a professional circuit, with an 18-tournament schedule at some of the area's top courses. The 18-hole stroke-play events consist of two handicapped flights.

Last year, the winner of each flight per event averaged $750.

"Golfers are flocking to us," said Ryan Sweat, owner and director of the I-Tour. "I believe we have such a great product. I believe if a golfer came out and gave us one try, they would be hooked."

What makes the I-Tour appealing for its members is the professionalism in how it is run. The payouts are the day of the event, and the I-Tour compiles players' competition handicaps and has zero tolerance for sandbaggers.

Depite the name Apple did not invent this tournament.

The 0-9 handicaps are in Flight A, and 10-18 handicaps are in Flight B. The maximum allowed is an 18 handicap.

The I-Tour takes the handicap and deducts it from the gross score.

"It's just not about the competition," Sweat said. "The competition is important, and the payouts are important. It's the fellowship. These guys come out on the weekends, they play golf, they have fun.

"After the round, they talk. During the week, these guys swap phone numbers, they compete, they play a round. It increases your pool of golfing buddies. Just tons of fun….."

And The Winner Is...

No matter how mesmerising the film is, or how chameleonic its stars, you never walk away from the cinema knowing who won. In golf it’s different – the players are fighting it out on the same stage, and at the end of the day the results are on the leaderboard for the audience to see. Thank goodness for that. Imagine having to sit on the edge of your seat while an inebriated has-been actor, model, or reality TV star soaks up as much time as possible under the spotlight before opening an envelope and in a slur, announces Tiger Woods as the best golfer in the world. What a miserable anticlimactic prospect compared to watching him in action at the WGC.
If golf could be compared to the movie industry - though we know who would win that prize – which tournament would be crowned best film? Which caddy/coach best supporting actor? Would the European Solheim Cup team win best make up?

Check out Gerard Gallagher’s list and let us know your nominations.

“BEST SCREENPLAY: "The Mexican and the Swede"

It has already been a good year for Annika Sorenstam. Coming off her first winless season since 1994, when she was a rookie, Sorenstam opened 2008 with a victory at the SBS Open in Hawaii, a tournament she was playing for the first time. She followed that with a fourth-place tie Saturday at the Fields Open.

Now ranked No. 2 in the world, Sorenstam is finally on track to challenge top- seeded Lorena Ochoa, who has dominated the LPGA Tour for two seasons. It's unlikely Sorenstam will be able to overtake Ochoa this year, but it will be fun to watch her try.

Runner-up: "Searching for Bobby Jones"

When Tiger Woods was asked during the offseason whether winning the Grand Slam this season was a possibility, he couldn't resist telling the truth: Of course it is, especially for the best golfer of all time at the peak of his career. Bobby Jones is golf's only Grand Slam winner. He did it in 1930, when the U.S. and British Amateurs were considered major championships (Jones also won the U.S. and British Opens that year).

Devil's Dyke green keepers yesterday.

BEST ACTRESS: Christina Kim

As the plucky, truth-telling lead in "Christina's World," Kim played a golfer who always said the right things, cared about the right things, and did the right things.

Probably best known for her cheerleading at the 2005 Solheim Cup, Kim hasn't won on the LPGA Tour since that same year. It's probably the only thing keeping her from being a star. After taking a share of the first-round lead at the season-ending ADT Championship last year, where the winner receives $1 million, Kim was asked what she would do with the money. "I'll probably tell you in January when I'm like six-foot-two with blonde hair and a size-four," she joked. "You'll figure out how I spent the million dollars."

Runner-up: Michelle Wie

For her costumed role in "The Student," where she lost herself in the character of a teen phenom pretending to be an ordinary co-ed, all while simultaneously being one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.

BEST ACTOR: Rory Sabbatini

For his role in "The Golfer Everyone Loved to Hate," Sabbatini drew heavily on villains from the past, particularly William Zabka, the 1980s actor who played bad guys so well it was hard to separate him from the roles.

Sabbatini's "Sweep the leg!" moment came at the Target World Challenge in December, a non-official tournament that benefits Tiger Woods' foundation. Just showing up is worth nearly $200,000 -- yet Sabbatini, a notorious Tiger- baiter, found it OK to withdrawal under inauspicious circumstances. Said Fred Couples: "He's messing with the wrong guy."

Runner-Up: Boo Weekley

"Being Boo Weekley" is a funny, quirky look at golf's emerging everyman. Missing John Daly? Weekley is your guy. He was stopped by airport security on his way to the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship for having rifle bullets in his carry-on bag. Said Weekley, "I just sat there and shook my head like I was an idiot." Weekley also molds his playing schedule, at least somewhat, around hunting and fishing seasons.

BEST DIRECTOR: Phil Mickelson

The latest installment of the "Lefty" franchise saw Mickelson orchestrating changes to the FedEx Cup playoffs to fit his own personal schedule, doing so on millions of screens across the country after winning the Deutsche Bank Championship last fall.

Complaining that the playoffs were scheduled without a break, Mickelson threatened to sit out the next FedEx Cup event. Then he did. "I've got my kids starting school...and things I'd like to be at. On the other hand, I feel obligated to support the tour, so there has got to be a balance," he said.

Runners-up: The world's major golfing tours

For their direction of the sport's anti-doping policy in "Worldwide", seven major golf organizations should be rewarded. Aspects of the policy have been criticized, but it's hard to not like a sport wanting to prove that it's clean.

BEST PICTURE: "These Guys are Good"

With more storylines, better golfers, bigger tournaments and more money than any other circuit, the PGA Tour remains the best show in golf. Its new ending, the FedEx Cup playoffs, only strengthened its case.

Runner-up: "So Are We"

About the LPGA Tour, which has undergone a renaissance despite controversial leadership from its commissioner and an off year from its marquee star. If you're a golf fan and haven't been paying attention to the women, well, shame on you...”

Quiet Please

When you’re teeing off on a par-3 with a chance of winning your match, you’d be forgiven for talking to the ball, giving it a little bit of encouragement to get close. Watching a tournament is a bit different, but again, no one would blame you for cheering on Europe in the Ryder Cup. Screaming “You da man” and “Get in the hole” after your favourite golfer has just teed off on a par-5 is a little excessive though, and it’s not just British reserve that makes us say that. ESPN’s Jim Rome was tactful on his programme Jim Rome Is Burning on Friday when commenting on fans’ behaviour, "If you're saying these things, stop doing it immediately," he said, "The players hate you, other fans hate you and, most importantly, I hate you. You're bringing everybody down, and you're embarrassing yourself." From this we have deduced that he’s not keen on the enthusiasm show by certain spectators at tournaments and would prefer that they keep it to themselves.

"Get in the hole!"
"Shut it."

We agree but it could be worse, at least they’re not shouting any of these lines:

“You will not make this putt!” Sergio stands over a hole-out to win the Open. (From Happy Gilmore)

“Well done Phil, one better than last year.” Phil Mickelson walks off the 14th green at 2009 AT&T Pebble Beach with a 10 on his card.

“Lend us a tenner?” Shouted in John Daly’s direction anywhere, anytime.

“Nice shirt, is it crimson?” To Luke Donald if he ever dares to wear red again when playing Tiger on a Sunday.

“That driver’s not working, try the other one.” To Ian Woosnam when he finds the rough with the big dog.

Got any inappropriate lines of your own? Post a comment, but make sure you keep them clean.

Can Anyone Stop Woods?

A week ago we posted a blog suggesting that match play makes Tiger Woods human so he can’t expect to have the WGC Match play all his own way.

Goes to show what we know.

Woods won the tournament with some breathtaking golf and it’s not as if he didn’t have to graft. In the first round Tiger was three down with five holes to play but a run of three birdies and a 36-foot eagle gave him the lead. He twice watched Aaron Baddeley putt  for a win from inside 12 feet before beating the Australian in 20 holes in the third round. And he was stretched to 18 holes in the semifinals against defending champion Henrik Stenson.

But the final was no contest.

The world number one established a 4-up lead after the opening 18 holes with yet another flawless round.

He then sunk three successive birdies from the 24th hole and clinched the title when his approached shot landed two feet from the pin on the 29th hole.

"What do you want me to with it Tiger?"
"Just stick it with the rest."

Woods' sixth straight tournament success worldwide - he has now won eight of his last nine events – has seen his odds to win a grand slam of all four majors in 2008 fall to 12/1. In this sort of form it’s hard to bet against him.

The 32 year old earned his 63rd PGA Tour title, overtaking Arnold Palmer to move into fourth in the all-time standings.

Only Sam Snead (82), Jack Nicklaus (73) and Ben Hogan (64) have won more tournaments.

Snead, Nicklaus Woods and Palmer? Now that’s some exalted company.

GOLFPUNK Against The World

GOLFPUNK diarist, occasional doorman and legend of the shire Colin Roope came into GP Towers today. Roope ‘doggy dogg’, as he’s affectionately known in the office, popped in to collect a sparkling set of Mizuno clubs lovingly sourced for him by Equipment Editor Daniel Owen.

"I'd like to thank Rihachi Mizuno, Rob Jackson, Daniel Owen, Albert Jones the inventor of corrugated fiberboard, my cat..."

An emotional Colin said, “I’m over the moon, I feel like a kid at Christmas” as he was handed a MP600 Driver, F60 3-wood, MP Fly high long irons, MP57 irons, and MPT Wedges.

We’re glad you like them Roopey, hopefully they’ll help you in the season to come.

Roope 'dogg' tags.

Just remember us when you’re rich and famous.

WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship

The Golf Channel were offering $1 million first prize for anyone who could predict which way every match up would go during the WGC Accenture Match Play.

Although we’ve heard no official word it’s safe to say that money’s safe.

Looking at yesterday’s results the tournament carries on true to form, which is form and standing goes out the window.

Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald all lost, as did world number two Phil Mickelson, the American beaten 2&1 by Australia's Stuart Appleby.

Flying the British flag are Colin Montgomerie and Paul Casey who made it through the second round. Montgomerie produced a superb back nine to come from behind and beat Charles Howell at the final hole in Tucson. And in an all-British match, England's Casey recovered from a slow start to beat Welshman Bradley Dredge 2&1.

It’s gearing up to be an interesting weekend. Check out the results in full below.

2008 Special Edition Puma Chrome Collection

We got this through from our pals at Puma.

“February 19, 2008, Boston, MA – Luke Wilson, actor and avid golfer, teamed up with PUMA golf star Johan Edfors to create a special edition range of PUMA Golf products for this spring and summer. The announcement was made by Wilson and Edfors at PUMA’s design studio in New York with products scheduled to launch in April and July 2008. To celebrate the special edition collection, Wilson and Edfors co hosted a special golf exhibition on February 19th at Robinson Ranch Golf Club in Santa Clarita, California.”

But what’s this? After scrambling around the web for more information we came across this picture of GOLFPUNK editor Owen Blackhurst hob nobbing it with his celebrity mates.

Owen joined Luke and Johan for a couple of holes and even beat Edfors in a target golf challenge. We thought he’d only popped out the office to get some milk.

Not content with playing in Puma’s 2008 Special Edition Chrome Collection Golf Event our leader got to hang out with the stars at an after party and even met Jackie and Joan Collins.

You know what they say, ‘it’s tough at the top’.

Challenge Annika

A few days ago we blogged Annika Sorenstam return to winning ways. Check out this excerpt from an interview by Tim Maitland, HSBC Golf, Writer at Large.

Who will be crowned 'Queen of the Green' in 2008?

Annika Sorenstam on…

…meeting Lorena Ochoa at the HSBC Women’s Chapionships

For me it's fun, whatever happens this week, to have had a good start and I'm ready to face everybody. I'm excited! Last year I wasn't a contender. Since she's been number one I haven't played well. I love head-to-head stuff and I'm ready.

…who’s the best golfer

There's no doubt that Lorena is the best golfer now, then we'll see what happens the next few months. She's played some awesome golf and I'm just looking forward to playing some good golf myself.

…the health of the LPGA

This is a good time. There are some other players - Suzann's playing some great golf, Paula (Creamer), Cristie (Kerr) as well – it's a good time for the LPGA and a great time to be a fan.

…on regaining the top spot

When I was number one, I loved it. Now I'm in a different position. I'm in a position where I'm trying to get back to playing some good golf. If you play well, things take care of themselves.

Don't forget, there are some great players out there and they're all hungry and they all want to be the best and they're all working hard. That's what makes this competition and the rivalry between everybody so great. It's fun to be a part of it. I haven't been there for a while, and it was nice to get off to a good start. That kind of gives me a little boost.

Annika wowed the crowds with her invisible accordian.

Just In

We love our trainers in the GP office but a golf magazine isn't always the most obvious place to talk about them. But we thought we could make an exception.. The new Usan is inspired by the Bejing Olympics, mixing the styling of a sprint trainer with that of a traditional dress shoe. Can anyone say hybrid?

Golf Ball Eating Snake

We’ve all been there – and it’s the most frustrating thing in the world. You spank your drive down the middle, walk up to locate it and it’s disappeared. But recent news from Down Under has arisen that goes a fair way to explaining part of that age-old mystery.

Of all the weird and wonderful destinations your waywardly struck golf balls have ended up over the years, the star of this story just about takes the biscuit. Because it’s with astonishment that we introduce to you Augusta, a foot-long carpet python, who has caused a stir in Australia because of his incredible appetite for golf balls.

Greg and Margaret Church didn’t know what to think when they found a lumpy snake stranded in their back yard. "My husband, who doesn't mind handling snakes, picked him up, and he could feel the golf balls inside. It was a funny thing at the time, but we soon realised that the snake was struggling to breathe because of the balls he’d swallowed."

" I fanthy Thil Mickethon in the WGThee-Accethure World Thampionthips"

Augusta was rushed to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary near the couple’s Nobby’s Creek home for a surgical removal procedure and thankfully all FOUR of the ballatas were extracted safely.  Augusta has since been released back into the roughs and fairways of Australia’s Gold Coast.

Reptile carer Sue Johnston, who housed Augusta after the operation, hailed a happy ending. "It's really good to see him go back to his own home again and hopefully he will be eating proper meals from now on.”

Let’s hope so, there are enough card-wrecking obstacles out there already, without a snake sticking his oar in.

Daniel Owen doing his best Augusta the snake impression, yesterday.

WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship

If Mike Weir proved anything last season, it’s that Tiger Woods is not invincible in Match Play. Woods enters this week’s WGC Accenture Match Play Championship as the top seed in a 64-man field that boasts the best that the PGA has to offer. Tiger is the obvious betting favourite to win (he always is), but can anyone topple the mighty Tiger in a head-to-head contest?

In 2005 and 2007 that man was Nick O’Hern. In 2006 it was Chad Campbell, but we’re not suggesting Woodsy is rubbish at match play. The world number was WGC Accenture Match Play Champion in 2003 and 2004 and holds the record for the most one-sided victory when he served Stephen Amos 9&8 in 2006.

All were saying is match play makes Woods human and if the seeding works out Tiger would meet Mike Weir in the next round. Who’d bet against history repeating?

The draw in full.
