GOLFPUNK Wins The Open

It’s only Wednesday and GP have won the Open. The Puma Open that is. The GP Celebs featuring Jason McAteer, John Alridge and led by the gaffer Phil Babb won the first Puma Open to be held out of America. And what a laugh it was.

It’s not the average golf tourny mind. The holes have novelty challenges, the likes of Havanna Club, Michelob and Monkey Shoulder provide the fuel and you get to rub shoulders with European Tour pros.

The comp was a two tiered affair. First, the golf featuring a hole where you had to throw darts. Then there was a casino round. After a dead heat it came down to the ultimate test. The Boat Race. As all the celebs were driving it was left to equipment encyclopaedia and occasional mis-speller Dan ‘The Knig of Culbs’ Owen to step in for our cause.

Danny O has a bit of previous when it comes to inhaling drinks so in the end it was no contest. By the time his opponent put his Michelob to his lips D’Owen had sunk his drink in two gulps and proudly gurned with his bottle on his head.

You made us proud Dan. Real proud.

Will The Real Phil Mickleson Please Stand Up?

The world number two returns to the scene of his best finish to date on the European Tour, readying himself for The Open next week.

Big Phil’s annual jaunt to the Scottish Open began yesterday, and he feels it is the perfect training for his attempt to take home The Open championship.

“Part of getting ready for next week is performing well this week, hitting shots sharply and crisply, being prepared for this week,” said Mickelson, who has been on a three week break from the game in preparation for the upcoming fortnight.

The popular left-hander has been in and out of form throughout this season but believes his freshness will allow him to be ready for the business end of the season, where he will also compete in the FedEx Cup, the PGA and the Ryder Cup.

But why mention Philly Mick when he’s tied 26th after two rounds? Well because we like this video that’s why.

There's plenty more where that came from at

Woods declines Ryder invite

Tiger Woods has turned down an offer from US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger to act as vice-captain at the event this September. The world number one, out for the rest of the season, said he wouldn't do it because he is not on the team, and the event is about competitors. "The guys will have plenty on their minds" he told his website." I wish them well and will be cheering loudly".

Phil: 'Too bad you cant make it man'. Tiger: 'Yeah real shame...'

Jaidee takes early lead in Scotland.

Thongchai Jaidee and Alexander Noren are the early pace-setters at the Scottish Open, both shooting seven under par 64's on a rain soaked Loch Lomond course. The pair finished the day one shot ahead of 2007 US Open champion Angel Cabrera, with John Bickerton and Niclas Fasth a shot further back on 5 under par. Lee Westwood, top ranked player in the current Ryder cup standings, sits on 4 under par, alongside former Scottish Open champions Thomas Levet and Johan Edfors. Ian Poulter sits on 2 under par, alongside Colin Montgomerie, the reason we're all watching the event. Big boys Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson failed to make an early impression on the leaderboard though, with Big Phil shooting even par, and the Big Easy falling to one over par, dropping two shots in the last three holes.

'Well, theres the leaders up there Phil...'

You Shoot What You Eat

Ever felt that your diet was stopping you from fulfilling your potential? No, neither have we, but experts are suggesting that by concentrating on your diet could mean shooting a lower round.

The experts say that consuming enough carbohydrates will sustain your blood sugar levels throughout your round, allowing your swing to become more stable and consistent.

In Germany last year, 20 golfers participated in a six-week test where afterwards they were measured against a group of golfers with a similar handicap. According to researchers conducting the study, the test group hit their tee shots noticeably closer on a 148-yard par-3.

You are what you eat they say and being nuts about golf whilst eating nuts during golf might just be the answer to a sane round. Is this nutritionist, tofu-eating mumbo jumbo? Yeh, we think so.

We could all learn alot from big JD.

Monty Apologises

The ‘only reason we watch golf’ apologised today for his outburst at the London Club last week. Sky Sports sound technician, Ross Kimberley, was on the receiving end of one of Monty’s famous eruptions after he had hit into the water at the 13th.

When Kimberley responded to Montgomerie’s initial “do you have a problem here?” question, with a subdued “no problem at all”, the Scot retorted with, “you’re here because of me, remember that.”

"You talking to me?"

These comments shocked the golfing fraternity and Sky Sports columnist, Ewan Murray, described it as the “most embarrassing few minutes I have witnessed on a course.”

Murray called for a public apology, which he received today. “I was clearly out of line on this occasion” said golf’s answer to God. “I have spoke to Mark Roe and asked him to get the man’s address so I can follow this apology with another one.”
Montgomerie tees off today in the Scottish Open looking to enhance his Ryder Cup standings with a win. At the moment he out of contention in 34th place and relying on Nick Faldo to choose him as a captain’s pick.

Don't stop me now

Bit of an effort to get up for that Sunday morning tee time? Trying to pluck up the energy to go up the range after work? Then have a read of this. Martin Thom plays twice a week at his local club, Long Prairie Golf Country Club. The course is par 72, and measures 6,302 yards. Nothing unusual here. Try this-Martin is 101 years old!." I used to be able to par this quite often, but not anymore" said Martin, who didnt pick up a golf club until he reached his sixties. He usually plays with two 'younger' friends, who are in their eighties. The three balls combined age is 272! "I like it" he says. "Some days I'm pretty good, other days not so good, but it's always fun". Mr Thom, we salute you.

Van de Velde on way to Birkdale.

Frenchman Jean Van de Velde was one of 12 players to come through Open Championship at Hillside yesterday. Van de Velde is most remembered for his spectacular final hole collapse at the 1999 Open at Carnoustie. Needing a double bogey six to become champion, he proceeded to hack his way down the last to a triple bogey seven. He went on to lose the resulting play off to Paul Lawrie. “I qualified in 1999, so maybe this is my chance” said the 42 year old. Van de Velde finished second behind former Walker Cup player Jamie Elson, thanks to a birdie at the 18th, set up by an approach to 18 inches. Former amateur world number one Danny Willett missed out after taking a double bogey six up the last. The youngster from Doncaster has one more chance to make Birkdale, after receiving a late invitation to play in the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond, which begins on Thursday. Other notable names to make it through local qualifying include former Ryder Cup star Phillip Walton, and ex-European Tour winner Jonathan Lomas.

Seventh Heaven

We've all had it.

The round where your scorecard looks more like Kevin Pietersen's run rate than a round of golf. It was no different for golfer Allan Errington. Playing in a staff golf day at Newmachar Golf Club, he averaged seven for the first eight holes before reaching the par three 9th.

"I had hit seven on each hole, so I thought I may as well use my seven iron here" said the Operations manager from Aberdeen. The shot he then proceeded to hit bounced once before dropping straight into the cup. "I hit the ball and I knew it was good and I saw it go in. It was a fantastic feeling".

The feeling was probably made slightly more fantastic by the £15,000 car that he won for his troubles, which he says his wife would now be driving. Rather than being the catalyst for success though, Mr Errington then proceeded to lose 23 balls in the next nine holes after his hole in one.

Good effort.

Monty sets out plan.

Colin Montgomerie has been in reflective mood ahead of the Scottish Open, which tees off on Thursday.

"I'm a Scot, and whether it's me or someone else, we want a Scot in the Ryder Cup team" he said. " As far as I'm aware, we've always had one in the modern era. We dont want that run to end, which is more motivation for me to make the team" he added.

Monty is happy with his form tee to green currently, but is less enthusisatic about his form on the greens. "I've been chopping and changing with putters and don't really know where I am. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone". He is set on choosing a putter and trying to stick with it. "Even if it doesn't work for nine holes I have to stick with it. It's not the putter, its the putter".

'Think we can cross this one off the list....'

Donald out of Scottish Open.

Luke Donald has withdrawn from the Scottish Open which starts this Thursday, as he battles to overcome the wrist injury he picked up in the final round of the US Open at Torrey Pines. Donald, who has slipped to 39th on the Ryder Cup standings, finshed fourth last year, and was runner up to Johan Edfors two years ago at Loch Lomond, but a spokesman for the Englishman has said that his injury needs one more weeks rest. "Lukes been speaking to specialists and is almost ready to resume playing, but as a precaution hes going to give it one more week" said Donald's spokesman. Another absentee from the event will be German Martin Kaymer, whose mother died of cancer over the weekend. He is currently seventh in the Ryder Cup standings. Despite the withdrawals, the event retains a very strong field, including Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie and Rocco Mediate, who lost the memorable play off to Tiger Woods at last month's US Open.

Hudson rocks English Open.

England's Rebecca Hudson claimed the English Open at The Oxfordshire Golf Club on Sunday with a final round 64. Hudson's impressive round contained 8 birdies, despite the blustery conditions. Overnight leader Melissa Reid, who led by four shots going into the final round, had to settle for second place after missing a birdie on the 17th to draw level. Hudson described her victory as 'wonderful'. It was her second title of the year, following her win at the Tenerife Open in June. "Back to back wins, I can't believe it" she said. "To win in your home country is just fantastic". Becky Brewerton of Wales finished tied 7th, alongside England's Lora Fairclough.

Tiger out, Kim in.

Last week we brought you the story of the journeyman pro's bidding to take home the winners cheque in the absence of Tiger Woods. It seems they will have to keep plodding along, as in the absence of one sensation, an emerging one claimed the spotlight. 23 year old Antony Kim claimed his second tour title of the year at the AT&T National on Sunday with a final round 65, becoming the first American under the age of 25 to win two PGA Tour events in the same year since the great man himself. Kim finished with a bogey free round to end on 12 under. He has attributed his success down to a change in attitude. "My preperation and work ethic couldn't have gotten any worse" he said. " So it had to get better". Sweeden's Freddie Jacobsen came home in 30 shots to finish with a 65, claiming second place and a spot in the Open at Birkdale, which begins on the 17th July.

'Tiger or Kim?'

Ross the Boss.

England's Ross Fisher claimed the European Open at the London Club in Kent on Sunday after a final round 68. The win is Fisher's second on tour, and puts him up to 11th in the Ryder Cup standings. "They say the second win is harder" said Fisher. I might have made it look easy, but it certainly wasn't". Fisher finished on 20 under par to take the first prize of £400,000. His round included a holed bunker shot on the 18th green. Sergio Garcia appears to be continuing his good form. The joint favourite for the Open at Birkdale shot a best of the day 66 in blustery conditions, and for those of you contemplating putting some of your hard earned cash on him, you'll be pleased to hear he had a great day on the greens. Garcia said "it's the best putting round I have ever had. I don't expect to putt like this every round. I would love to though because it would make the game easy."
'Should really find the ball first sir before I get the yardage?'

Journeyman Pro's strike back.

In the abscence of world number one Tiger Woods, several journeyman pros are looking to cash in on their increased chances of winning this week at the AT&T National at Congressional Golf and Country Club. First round leader Steve Marino fired a five under par 65 to sit one shot clear of Rod Pampling, Bob Estes and Frank Lickliter. Europe's Freddie Jacobsen and Alex Cejka are both on three under, alongside teen sensation Antony Kim. With first prize in the region of £542,000, those who make the cut will be optimistic of a big pay day.
'Im sorry Mr Mayfair, but your not the only one trying to take advantage of this....'

Tiger declares he will roar back.

World Number one Tiger Woods has declared that he will be in his best physical shape for years on his return from injury. In case you've been living in a small cave for the last couple of weeks, Woods has taken the rest of the season off to have reconstructive surgery on his left knee. "The doctors say my long term health will be a lot better than it's been over the past decade" said Woods. He added "I'm really looking forward to that, and not having pain after I'm playing and while I'm playing". Woods is currently on crutches and in a straight leg brace, and is reduced to watching the remainder of the season on the TV.
