Oh The Fun We Had

And so our Open oddessy is over. The Claret Jug is full of, well claret, and Padraig has put pay to the nonsense about this being known as the Tiger-less Open. Congratulations. If we had more time to develop that time machine we’ve been talking about we’d stick everything we had on Harrington sit back and watch it all again.

A big hug and a sloppy peck on the cheek to everyone who joined us at the clubhouse, we couldn’t do it with out you. From readers to media types, golfers to passers by we salute you. Thanks of course to the fantabulous Bunker Babes who turned a few heads and raised a few heart beats in the mini Hummers, anyone who got involved we hope you had a blast. Special mention goes out to the staff and management of Rocking Asia for looking after everyone, we’ll see you soon no doubt. And ta very much to the band Bedroom Revolution, if there’s any justice those cats are going to be huge.

Anyone reading this who couldn’t make it this year don’t worry we’ll do it all again next July. In fact scratch that. We’re not sure we can wait that long. We’re going to try and all decant to for next weeks Knowsley Junior Golf Tournament. Now we’ve just got to clear it with the boss.

Padraig Holds Onto The Claret Jug

Irishmen winning Open Championships eh? They’re like buses.

We wait 68 years for a player from the Emerald Isle to get their hands on the Claret Jug then he goes and does it two years on the spin. The first European in 102 years for crying out loud.

Hats off to Ian Poulter for a stellar final round of 69 to give himself a chance. His putt on the 72nd that looked good enough to win the Open and was a sign of what the boy from Stevenage can do. We hope his steel in the heat of battle will bode well for future Majors.

But in the end it looks like the par five 71st was the difference. Where Poults three putted for par Paddy stiffed it to three foot for eagle. If Ian could have bagged a birdie on his visit who knows what that would have done to the Harrington’s nerves but it wasn’t meant to be and it’s all speculation anyway.

What we do know is the Pod is now a multiple major winner, which separates him from many players past and present. With all the speculation coming into the tournament about the double Open winners injury you can’t rate his performance high enough. Watching Padraig and baby Paddy grinning as they walked away from the 18th green you could see that was no limp wristed performance.

Final day fireworks expected.

Royal Birkdale is still in the grip of a timewarp today, as Greg Norman takes a two shot lead into the final round today. The 53-year-old two time former champion shot a sterling 72 in gusty conditions yesterday. With winds rising to over 40mph, no one in the field managed to shoot under par. "I'll put this down in the top three hardest rounds of golf I have played," said Norman. "I have played in tougher weather but this being the third round on Royal Birkdale golf course, it was brutal. Norman will tee off this afternoon in the final pairing alongside defending champion Padraig Harrington, who also shot 72 yesterday, and stands a real chance of retaining the trophy he won after last years dramatic play off with Sergio Garcia. Things wont be easy though, with more gusty winds forecast, and around 10 players within four shots of the lead. So sit back and enjoy. It should be a cracker.

It's A Wrap....Party

Our livers can hardly take it but we’re putting our health on the line so we can party hearty with you our valued and respected readers. Yup the GOLFPUNK and Oakley ‘Wrap Party' takes place tonight at, you guessed it, Rocking Asia in Southport. Last night the odd pro who missed the cut came down to drown their sorrows/dance like maniacs and hopefully tonight we’ll see a few more.

Don’t get all Sandy Lyle on us, cheer up, come down and bid us fairwell.

The Open Day 2

Greg Norman eh? Bleeding eck. When we saw the top of the leader board near the end of the day we thought someone had stuck a video in. Yes we said video. The last time we expected ‘The Great White Shark’ to be competing DVD were a glint in a marketing mans eye.

GOLFPUNK Wins The Open

It’s only Wednesday and GP have won the Open. The Puma Open that is. The GP Celebs featuring Jason McAteer, John Alridge and led by the gaffer Phil Babb won the first Puma Open to be held out of America. And what a laugh it was.

It’s not the average golf tourny mind. The holes have novelty challenges, the likes of Havanna Club, Michelob and Monkey Shoulder provide the fuel and you get to rub shoulders with European Tour pros.


The comp was a two tiered affair. First, the golf featuring a hole where you had to throw darts. Then there was a casino round. After a dead heat it came down to the ultimate test. The Boat Race. As all the celebs were driving it was left to equipment encyclopaedia and occasional mis-speller Dan ‘The Knig of Culbs’ Owen to step in for our cause.

Danny O has a bit of previous when it comes to inhaling drinks so in the end it was no contest. By the time his opponent put his Michelob to his lips D’Owen had sunk his drink in two gulps and proudly gurned with his bottle on his head.

You made us proud Dan. Real proud.

Will The Real Phil Mickleson Please Stand Up?

The world number two returns to the scene of his best finish to date on the European Tour, readying himself for The Open next week.

Big Phil’s annual jaunt to the Scottish Open began yesterday, and he feels it is the perfect training for his attempt to take home The Open championship.

“Part of getting ready for next week is performing well this week, hitting shots sharply and crisply, being prepared for this week,” said Mickelson, who has been on a three week break from the game in preparation for the upcoming fortnight.

The popular left-hander has been in and out of form throughout this season but believes his freshness will allow him to be ready for the business end of the season, where he will also compete in the FedEx Cup, the PGA and the Ryder Cup.

But why mention Philly Mick when he’s tied 26th after two rounds? Well because we like this video that’s why.

Woods declines Ryder invite

Tiger Woods has turned down an offer from US Ryder Cup captain Paul Azinger to act as vice-captain at the event this September. The world number one, out for the rest of the season, said he wouldn't do it because he is not on the team, and the event is about competitors. "The guys will have plenty on their minds" he told his website." I wish them well and will be cheering loudly".

Jaidee takes early lead in Scotland.

Thongchai Jaidee and Alexander Noren are the early pace-setters at the Scottish Open, both shooting seven under par 64's on a rain soaked Loch Lomond course. The pair finished the day one shot ahead of 2007 US Open champion Angel Cabrera, with John Bickerton and Niclas Fasth a shot further back on 5 under par. Lee Westwood, top ranked player in the current Ryder cup standings, sits on 4 under par, alongside former Scottish Open champions Thomas Levet and Johan Edfors. Ian Poulter sits on 2 under par, alongside Colin Montgomerie, the reason we're all watching the event. Big boys Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson failed to make an early impression on the leaderboard though, with Big Phil shooting even par, and the Big Easy falling to one over par, dropping two shots in the last three holes.

You Shoot What You Eat

Ever felt that your diet was stopping you from fulfilling your potential? No, neither have we, but experts are suggesting that by concentrating on your diet could mean shooting a lower round.

The experts say that consuming enough carbohydrates will sustain your blood sugar levels throughout your round, allowing your swing to become more stable and consistent.

In Germany last year, 20 golfers participated in a six-week test where afterwards they were measured against a group of golfers with a similar handicap. According to researchers conducting the study, the test group hit their tee shots noticeably closer on a 148-yard par-3.

You are what you eat they say and being nuts about golf whilst eating nuts during golf might just be the answer to a sane round. Is this nutritionist, tofu-eating mumbo jumbo? Yeh, we think so.

Monty Apologises

The ‘only reason we watch golf’ apologised today for his outburst at the London Club last week. Sky Sports sound technician, Ross Kimberley, was on the receiving end of one of Monty’s famous eruptions after he had hit into the water at the 13th.

When Kimberley responded to Montgomerie’s initial “do you have a problem here?” question, with a subdued “no problem at all”, the Scot retorted with, “you’re here because of me, remember that.”

"You talking to me?"

These comments shocked the golfing fraternity and Sky Sports columnist, Ewan Murray, described it as the “most embarrassing few minutes I have witnessed on a course.”

Murray called for a public apology, which he received today. “I was clearly out of line on this occasion” said golf’s answer to God. “I have spoke to Mark Roe and asked him to get the man’s address so I can follow this apology with another one.”
Montgomerie tees off today in the Scottish Open looking to enhance his Ryder Cup standings with a win. At the moment he out of contention in 34th place and relying on Nick Faldo to choose him as a captain’s pick.
