A Warning

People listen up. With the new Batman film out in the UK it was  amazing to get a letter from another crusader for truth and justice in the form of our mate Jonny Firth. He wrote in with a warning all golfers should heed.

Dear GP,

What's up there guys?  I hope you are keeping both yourselves and your magazine nice.

Just like so many people that have enough time to write into Points Of View, I am enraged.  Not with the quality of broadcasting or the use of my licence fee - it is to do with golf and it does have a point.

Someone was kind enough to post the list of drivers that have recently been made illegal by the R&A and I was surprised to see the amount of drivers that no longer conform.  I was then mortified to find out that I owned a non-conforming driver.

As I remember it, a lot of clubs were sold as having hot faces, something you accepted on purchase.

I got mine four yeas ago and was never under the impression that it would be illegal in 2008.  It wasn't even from one of the manufacturers more publically announcing that their drivers had trampoline effect faces.  It is only a couple of letters on the base of the club that make it illegal as they had other models out without the offending letters that do conform.  I even ordered it, so didn't necessarily know which one I was going to get.

Obviously, I wasn't intending to use this driver for the rest of my life, but do feel slightly agrieved.

I don't feel this has necessarily been broadcast well enough and reckon your readers could do with knowing the list is out there on the R&A website and that it is probably worth their checking their bags for offending kit before breaking a course record and having it cruelly taken away because of the co-efficient of restitution of their driving stick.

Nice one.

Jonny

Cheers JF, you can get a full list of illegal drivers here.

Jonny on his way to an online retailer.

Seniors Open

The Seniors Open kicked off today with the (old) man of the moment Greg Norman playing going out with Tom Watson and Sandy Lyle. The Shark’s performance at Birkdale has risen the profile of this tournament which can only help. We’ll certainly be keeping an eye on proceedings.

Apart from Watson and Lyle, Norman has familiar rivals who have won tournaments this year.

Watson also has a Champions Tour victory this season and could complete his third Open double. He has won both the Open and Seniors Open at Turnberry and Muirfield, and another of his five Open triumphs was at Troon in 1982.

"Fore left."

GOLFPUNK Against the World Sam Torrance is another of the legends in the field. We can’t wait to catch up with him and find out what it’s like.

Web users unite. We don’t mean form a anarchic group to over throw the Bourgeoisie. We mean, like, get together. There is a social networking site for people who play, coach or plain love sport.

The Last Time We'll Mention It, Honest

There’s plenty of golf on there among other stuff so join the team and get involved.

We don’t mean to rub it in but the Open was well good. You can read all about it in GOLFPUNK out 13th August.

Told ya.

Beware The Injured Golfer

After Padraig gingerly picked up the Claret jug (with one hand obviously) it got us thinking about the fate of the year’s major winners.

The Masters – Trevor Immelman: Recovers from back surgery, wins.
US Open – Tiger bags it with a busted knee and a broken leg. Mediate is runner up with a dodgy back. Westwood comes in third a week after having tonsillitis.
The Open Championship – Padraig Harrington goes back to back with a gammy wrist.
USPGA – We suggest Poulter and Donald challenge Peter Hedblom and Boo Weekley to a tag team wrestling match after the first practice round. The damage they’d undoubtedly suffer at their hands will see both the Englishmen in a playoff for the Wanamaker Trophy come Sunday.

You heard it here first.

"Ian and Luke we're coming to get ya. Grrrr"

Subtitle Fun

Subtitles are brilliant. Watching the Open in a public house and reading Alliss, Torrance and his pals insights into the days proceeding you come across some very interesting things.  We don’t know if they have a team of stenographers onboard or use voice recognition software but there’s the odd typo which the BBC seek to correct. Check out some our favourites from the weekends coverage.

For Ryan – Poor arron – (correction) 4 Iron

Advanced foreword – (correction) Bounced forward

One of these right to left poets – (correction) putts

Sergio with 1,362 goals – (correction) 136 to go

Reyal libberman St Annes – (correction) Royal Lytham, St Annes

And our favourite…

June Direct – (correction) Jim Furyk

Off the back of these we’re never going to watch a live sporting event on the BBC with the volume up again. However as the Beeb are already advertising their coverage of the World Bowls Tour the chances are we wouldn’t watch it at all.

June Direct, yesterday.

Oh The Fun We Had

And so our Open oddessy is over. The Claret Jug is full of, well claret, and Padraig has put pay to the nonsense about this being known as the Tiger-less Open. Congratulations. If we had more time to develop that time machine we’ve been talking about we’d stick everything we had on Harrington sit back and watch it all again.

A big hug and a sloppy peck on the cheek to everyone who joined us at the clubhouse, we couldn’t do it with out you. From readers to media types, golfers to passers by we salute you. Thanks of course to the fantabulous Bunker Babes who turned a few heads and raised a few heart beats in the mini Hummers, anyone who got involved we hope you had a blast. Special mention goes out to the staff and management of Rocking Asia for looking after everyone, we’ll see you soon no doubt. And ta very much to the band Bedroom Revolution, if there’s any justice those cats are going to be huge.

You can check out their stuff at www.myspace.com/bedroomrevolution. You’ll appreciate it when your muso pals rub their goatees and tell you about this great band they’ve ‘discovered’ only for you to show them wealth of your knowledge. They love all that. So log on, have a listen and add them as pals, you won’t be disappointed.

Anyone reading this who couldn’t make it this year don’t worry we’ll do it all again next July. In fact scratch that. We’re not sure we can wait that long. We’re going to try and all decant to for next weeks Knowsley Junior Golf Tournament. Now we’ve just got to clear it with the boss.

Padraig Holds Onto The Claret Jug

Irishmen winning Open Championships eh? They’re like buses.

We wait 68 years for a player from the Emerald Isle to get their hands on the Claret Jug then he goes and does it two years on the spin. The first European in 102 years for crying out loud.

Hats off to Ian Poulter for a stellar final round of 69 to give himself a chance. His putt on the 72nd that looked good enough to win the Open and was a sign of what the boy from Stevenage can do. We hope his steel in the heat of battle will bode well for future Majors.

But in the end it looks like the par five 71st was the difference. Where Poults three putted for par Paddy stiffed it to three foot for eagle. If Ian could have bagged a birdie on his visit who knows what that would have done to the Harrington’s nerves but it wasn’t meant to be and it’s all speculation anyway.

What we do know is the Pod is now a multiple major winner, which separates him from many players past and present. With all the speculation coming into the tournament about the double Open winners injury you can’t rate his performance high enough. Watching Padraig and baby Paddy grinning as they walked away from the 18th green you could see that was no limp wristed performance.

Click below to see how he did it.

Final day fireworks expected.

Royal Birkdale is still in the grip of a timewarp today, as Greg Norman takes a two shot lead into the final round today. The 53-year-old two time former champion shot a sterling 72 in gusty conditions yesterday. With winds rising to over 40mph, no one in the field managed to shoot under par. "I'll put this down in the top three hardest rounds of golf I have played," said Norman. "I have played in tougher weather but this being the third round on Royal Birkdale golf course, it was brutal. Norman will tee off this afternoon in the final pairing alongside defending champion Padraig Harrington, who also shot 72 yesterday, and stands a real chance of retaining the trophy he won after last years dramatic play off with Sergio Garcia. Things wont be easy though, with more gusty winds forecast, and around 10 players within four shots of the lead. So sit back and enjoy. It should be a cracker.

See you at the 19th.

This is the last time you'll see this pic in a blog, honest.

The Open Day 2

Greg Norman eh? Bleeding eck. When we saw the top of the leader board near the end of the day we thought someone had stuck a video in. Yes we said video. The last time we expected ‘The Great White Shark’ to be competing DVD were a glint in a marketing mans eye.

Check out the round up of an astonishing day then come to Rocking Asia in Southport for fun and festivities. It’s the GOLFPUNK and Adidas ‘Missed The Cut Party’.
