Tiger Woods eh? Hang on. Let’s see if we can talk about golf in 2008 without mentioning the fellow who shares his name with big cats from Bengal.
Here it goes.
Not quite the ‘captains choice’ but choice captains Fred Couples and Greg Norman will lead the U.S. and International teams for the 2009 Presidents Cup golf matches in San Francisco.
Couples will replace Jack Nicklaus, who led the U.S. the past three times in the biennial competition against a team of players from outside the U.S. and Europe.
Norman, a three-time Presidents Cup competitor from Australia, replaces South Africa's Gary Player.
Another way at looking at this story is…"Boom Boom and The Great White Shark will lead the teams for the 2009 Presidents Cup. They take over from The Golden Bear and The Black Knight (aka Mr Fitness)."
Not only are these four former world number ones some of the best to ever play, they also have some of the best nicknames.
Also it’s good to see Ernie Els back on form.
Just when you thought Ernie Els was becoming more easy pickings than Big Easy, the triple-Major-winner has bitten back at his critics – and gobbled up Luke Donald’s hopes of victory in the process winning the Honda Classic.
With this victory comes a resurgence that could see South Africa’s finest competing at the business end come Masters week. And while the European and US players will have half an eye on The Ryder Cup this year, The Big Easy will, no doubt, be on the prowl for Majors again…
And what a time to be a GOLFPUNK. GP diarist and cover star Nick Dougherty just missed out on a Top 20 finish, fellow diarists Graeme Storm (12th) and Simon Dyson (3rd) did their bank balances no harm at all at the Maybank Malaysian Open.
“What else is going on in GOLFPUNK land?” We hear you think. Other than a fresh batch of blazing Bunker Babes, the EU steel mountain’s worth of GolfJunk, videos galore and, of course, all the usual nonsense.
See you on the 19th.
Your pal,
